Reading and Phonics Practice (Language Arts & Reading)

Reading is a complex process that includes phonemic awareness, phonics, writing, vocabulary, and comprehension.

Upon entering the course, the student will be given both an informal reading inventory and an informal phonics inventory collecting data for various reading skills. This data is called a benchmark.

A summary of reading and phonics skills will be created for each student.

Data is then utilized for creating individual plans of action with differentiated lessons and activities specific to the student.

Daily activities include using notebook and pencil, dry erase board and dry erase markers, and reading books for pleasure (free access for online reading in class). Use of Class Dojo (smart phone app or online website) for parent communication.

Pre-requisites

Each participant:

 - should print all letters of the alphabet in capital and lowercase forms.

 - should know a majority of 26 alphabet letters and most of the basic letter sounds.

 - can write simple sentences.

 - can not retell stories with a logical order.

What will I learn?

Students will practice and review reading components and phonics strategies for daily applications.

The first thirty minutes consist of building and reviewing phonics (decoding or spelling) strategies through a of interactive activities.

The next thirty minutes develop research-based comprehension lessons using necessary reading skills like questioning, prediction, and compare/contrast with a variety of texts.

Students will receive a weekly syllabus, as a study guide, prior to the start of each six week session. (These documents will be modified depending upon the needs of participant results of benchmark data.)
